The Capability We Have Never Named
Defines PI and establishes the unresolved integrative problem: how professionals organise and use knowledge coherently under conditions of uncertainty.
ARCProfessional Intelligence
A working scholarly manuscript proposing Professional Intelligence as the integrative capability through which professionals synthesise knowledge, evidence, experience, context, ethics, metacognition and self-regulation to exercise informed, adaptive and defensible professional judgement.
ARC Papers 001–005 remain freely downloadable. The complete Volume I manuscript is a PI Network release.

Professional Intelligence integrates and interprets professional resources within context, generating professional judgement. Judgement becomes action; consequence creates evidence; and disciplined reflection can confirm, refine or reconstruct the Professional Intelligence available for future judgement.
The manuscript is deliberately explicit about its epistemic status: PI is a theoretically grounded construct, not an already validated claim.
Defines PI and establishes the unresolved integrative problem: how professionals organise and use knowledge coherently under conditions of uncertainty.
Positions expertise as a necessary foundation while asking a different explanatory question: how are professional resources integrated, weighted and reconstructed in this situation?
Introduces the Professional Intelligence Cycle as a conceptual representation of recurrent functions within judgement: noticing, interpreting, prioritising, judging and acting.
Explains curriculum, pedagogy, assessment, evidence and context as interacting sources that continually inform professional judgement, with ethics, metacognition and self-regulation operating across the architecture.
Proposes recursive development through professional action, consequence, reflection, reconstruction of judgement and reconstruction of PI itself.
Locates PI in relation to expertise, adaptive expertise, pedagogical content knowledge, teacher cognition, noticing, reflective practice, sensemaking, agency and professional learning.
Sets out questions of construct validity, internal structure, manifestation, development, collective PI, consequences and technology; and presents ARC as a practice-based design research opportunity rather than evidence of validation.
Volume I brings together the Professional Intelligence Cycle, the Architecture of Professional Intelligence and the Professional Intelligence Development Spiral as connected but distinct theoretical models.
The ARC Papers are open access. Volume I goes further: it integrates the construct, the developmental account, scholarly positioning and research agenda into the flagship framework manuscript.

The manuscript explicitly invites rigorous discussion about the coherence, distinctiveness, operationalisation and empirical testability of Professional Intelligence, including independent scrutiny of ARC as a design-based research environment.
